When researching environmentally friendly options it is easy to become confused by greenwashing, which overpromises the impact of certain products. With this in mind, it helps to have a few tips on what to look for when navigating the forest of green options.

Understand the difference between compostable and biodegradable.

The term biodegradable commonly appears in many product descriptions but it does not necessarily mean what you think. Biodegradable implies the products will breakdown in a landfill but this does not suggest that the rate of decomposition means it is safe for a permanent stay in the environment. Compostable products represent the true standard for items that maximize sustainability.

When I got married six and a half years ago, I honestly didn’t care what was in my cleaning products. We lived in an old apartment full of character and cobwebs, and I considered bleach my new best friend. When I began having children I began to think twice about the products in our home. Surely the things we breathe and come into contact with on a daily basis would affect our health, right? I bought things with words like “organic” and “natural” and “pure” on the labels, but I was fairly certain I was being sold a lie (and, at least some of the time, I was).

And then my son was born sensitive to just about anything unnatural and we began switching full force to safe, non-toxic everything. I am so glad we did.

My new rule of thumb is that my cleaning products shouldn’t be more dangerous than the problem I am trying to solve. (Emphasis added) So I may use bleach to kill mold, but I won’t use it to make my white’s whiter. Here is how I clean my whole house without nasty chemicals.

Even those who exclusively clean with biodegradable soap at home, however, may at some point be faced with a dilemma: being exposed to potentially contagious germs (think: shaking hands with someone at a party who just sneezed, or going to the bathroom in an airport) or cleaning their hands with, say, antibacterial soap.

Where did you learn how to do housework? If you’re like me, you learned a little from a college roommate about how she gets her whites so clean, a bit from an old boyfriend about getting closer to the dirt while scrubbing floors. But for the most part, you learned from your family of origin. Which means that you may be cleaning your home using methods from a bygone era.

So what? How much has changed when it comes to getting things clean, you may ask. If anything we’ve gotten worse—not better—as a nation at keeping house. But one thing that has changed greatly is our attention to the environment. Phosphates have been taken out of most dishwashing detergents, chlorine bleach alternatives have hit the market, and everything we do has become about using as little water as possible.

Clean goes green at Government Center | The Stillwater Gazette.

Until recently, Washington County Government Center custodians worked the night shift cleaning offices with an arsenal of chemical products, a lot of cotton rags and keeping lights on late into the evening.
But in June, center custodians went to a day shift cleaning schedule, reduced the number of cleaning solutions used and went to micro-fiber cloths and low-decibel, high-efficiency vacuums.
The changes are two months old and have led to energy savings and improved cleaning staff morale, said county Building Manager Greg Wood.
“A healthier building is the direct result of cleaning buildings in an environmentally sensitive way,” he told the Board of Commissioners during an update on the program Tuesday.
